You make some good points, Oliver. I guess the answer is that sometimes Youtube works for a client, and sometimes it really doesn't! It all depends on their requirements.

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your comments. Don't get me wrong, I love YouTube, and use it all the time. I think it is a fantastic solution for many people. Just sometimes it does't carry a brand very well. The Adverts are not always that easy to control. They also suggest the way that YouTube is moving with its player. They only make money from Ad revenues, therefore they are going to become more and more dominant, and there will not be anything we can do about it.
About the branding, you are correct, but it is still possible to find out that the video is hosted on YouTube.

You have highlighted another key disadvantage with the teenagers. One of our videos about a School has had some really bad comments, not about the video, but the students commenting about the school. This has to be controlled / taken advantage of.

Sometimes things that are free aren't the best answer.

Thanks for the comment!
We will certainly keep that all in mind should we get the chance to shoot on the Epic.
Quite interested in what the future holds for online video, I'm sure it'll eventually catch up. I managed to find some 4k YouTube videos http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5BF9E09ECEC8F88F Interesting to see where YouTube takes this.

Plus, YouTube has just launched 4K video... so I read yesterday, haven't checked it out yet myself. So the future is way above 1080p. It was always a compromise. When DCI first talked a uniform digital cinema spec, it was 4K... the industry got it's back up, because the technology wasn't there yet (well DALSA had their 4K Origin... but that was it, Sony hadn't even brought out their SXRD projectors yet). So they dropped it to 2K, and now judging from last NAB and this year's IBC this past week... 4K is the future even for consumers... eventually.

Interesting article, and a valid point. I'm in post on a web series shot on EPIC, but it has also been cut into a standalone short film, which will be making the festival rounds. We shot 5K, some HDR, cut the native R3D at 5K in Adobe Premiere CS5.5, and will conform the native R3D in Quantel Pablo for a 5K full res grade and finish.

So, the one point I disagree with you on, is the multiple generations of compression when shooting Red and ending up publishing on the web. In my case, from acquisition to final grade, media has stayed 5K R3D, there hasn't even been a single generation of compression or a codec change all the way through post, we've used camera media all the way to the end. The output from Pablo will be graded 2K 10-bit RGB444 DPX file sequence, downscaled from the 5K R3D, so no quality loss whatsoever there, we could just as easily output 4K DPX, and that master file sequence is good enough for print to 35mm or digital cinema encoding. Finally in the case of output for web, we will encode once only from 2K DPX to SD, 720p and 1080p H.264 for the web. That's effectively only one encoding pass from acquisition to web.

When it comes to the version we submit to festivals, we master that from the graded 2K DPX, and believe me it will be apparent in our screeners that we shot on EPIC and not 5D MkII.

So, I wholeheartedly agree with you, 99%, and most content for the web would not be finished to cinema specs as ours is, but when the content has multiple purposes, it's always better to shoot and finish for the highest quality you can, and then re purpose for everything from that master.

You never know what else you might want to use that content for in the future.
